Can Panhandle’s bays be saved from BP oil spill?

PENSACOLA BEACH — Looking from a distance like the notch on a gun sight, St. Andrews Pass is the 1,500- foot-wide gap that enables boats, fish and tidal currents to slip back and forth in a straight shot between the Gulf of Mexico and the bay that fronts Panama City.

It is also where marine contractors are using steel and heavy-gauge plastic to build a kind of catcher’s mitt for some of the crude that’s gushing from the broken BP PLC oil well under the Gulf south of Louisiana. They are pounding 54 tubular-steel pilings into the seafloor as anchors for a floating boom that has plastic skin 2.5 inches thick, is 30 inches in diameter and 2,800 feet long, and will be deployed in a “V” shape.
